Join the Georgia Tech Library Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Scholars Event Theater, located on the first floor of Price Gilbert, for the second event of AI Week 2025, a panel discussion on Enhancing Research with AI Tools.
This session will explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the realm of research. Our panel of AI experts, academic faculty, and research scientists -- including Dr. Mark Riedl, Ashok K. Goel, Anya Ivanova and Tyler Cook -- will discuss the applications of AI tools to enhance research efficiency and quality.
Topics will include how AI technologies can augment researchers’ capabilities in experimental design, data processing, data analysis, and more. This session will equip attendees with knowledge and inspiration for advancing their future research.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Dr. Mark Riedl is a Professor in the Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing and Associate Director of the Georgia Tech Machine Learning Center. Dr. Riedl’s research focuses on human-centered artificial intelligence—the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies that understand and interact with human users in more natural ways. Dr. Riedl’s recent work has focused on story understanding and generation, computational creativity, explainable AI, and teaching virtual agents to behave safely.
Ashok K. Goel is a Professor of Computer Science and Human-Centered Computing in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology and the Chief Scientist with Georgia Tech’s Center for 21st Century Universities. He is also the PI and Executive Director of the National Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education (aialoe.org) sponsored by NSF and headquartered at Georgia Tech. He is a Fellow of AAAI and the Cognitive Science Society, a recipient of AAAI’s Outstanding AI Educator Award, AAAI's Distinguished Service Award, IBM's Faculty Award, and University System of Georgia's Board of Regent's Award for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. He is also an Editor-Emeritus of AAAI's AI Magazine.
Anna (Anya) Ivanova is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology, where she heads the Language, Intelligence, and Thought (LIT) lab. She got her PhD from MIT’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Science and carried out her postdoctoral training at MIT Quest for Intelligence. In her research, Anya is examining the language-thought relationship in humans and in large language models using a synergistic combination of human brain imaging, behavioral studies, and computational modeling. She has been named one of the 35 Innovators under 35 by MIT Tech Review 2024.
Tyler Cook is the assistant program director of the Center for AI Learning at Emory University and a research affiliate in the Carter School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Philosophy at The Ohio State University, where he wrote a dissertation on various topics in AI ethics. He has taught many different courses, including ones on AI ethics and policy, engineering ethics, and contemporary social and moral problems in the US. Tyler’s research interests in ethics are broad, ranging from theoretical questions about the nature of moral properties to practical questions about the responsible development and deployment of AI and robotics systems.
